GENERALMUSIKDIREKTOR BOCHUMER SYMPHONIKER
INTENDANT ANNELIESE BROST MUSIKFORUM RUHR

Since the beginning of this season, Tung-Chieh Chuang is the new general music director of the Bochum Symphony Orchestra and artistic director of the Anneliese Brost Musikforum Ruhr.

The young, up-and-coming conductor from Taiwan laid the foundation for his international career in 2015 by winning the Malko Competition in Copenhagen. Prior to this, Chuang had already won prizes at the Sir Georg Solti International Conducting Competition in Frankfurt, the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition of the Bamberger Symphoniker and the Jeunesse Musicales International Conducting Competition in Bucharest.

As guest conductor Tung-Chieh Chuang has appeared with orchestras such as Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, WDR Sinfonieorchester, SWR Symphonieorchester, Dresdner Philharmonie, Bochumer Symphoniker, Tonkünstler-Orchester Niederösterreich, Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, Oslo Philharmonic, BBC Symphony Orchestra, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Taiwan Philharmonic, NCPA Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. He also works regularly with orchestras including MDR Sinfonieorchester Leipzig, Deutsche Kammer-philharmonie Bremen, Lapland Chamber Orchestra, Sønderjyllands Symphony Orchestra, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Tampere Philharmonic Orchestra, Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra and Oviedo Filarmonía.

In his first season in Bochum, Chuang will introduce himself to his audience with the new concert series "Von Herzen" (From the Heart), presenting works from the great orchestral literature that are particularly close to his heart. He will be supported by renowned soloists such as Anna Vinnitskaya, Seong-Jin Cho, Ning Feng and Daniel Lozakovich. Upcoming engagements include re-invitations to the Dresdner Philharmonie, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra and Taiwan Philharmonic. In addition, he will make debuts with PHION Orkest van Gelderland & Overijssel, Noord Nederlands Orkest and Stavanger Symphony Orchestra.

In 2010 Chuang received the Edwin B. Garrigues Fellowship of the Curtis Institute of Music. A year later in Philadelphia, he initiated the Curtis Japan Benefit Concert, donating all proceeds to the victims of the March 2011 earthquake via the Red Cross Japan. In 2012 he launched the first orchestral ‘flashmob’ in Taiwan in his role as Principal Conductor of the National Taiwan University Symphony Orchestra.

Born into a family of professional musicians, Tung-Chieh Chuang learned to play the horn and the piano from an early age, giving his first public concert at the age of eleven. He continued his education at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia and the Hochschule für Musik “Franz Liszt” Weimar. His mentors include Mark Gibson, Gustav Meier, Otto-Werner Mueller and Nicolás Pasquet.

The conductor recently moved to Bochum with his family. He is the father of a young daughter.
