Sabine Meyer is one of the world's most renowned instrumental soloists. It is partly due to her that the clarinet, often underestimated as a solo instrument, has recaptured the attention of the concert platform.
Born in Crailsheim, she studied in Stuttgart with Otto Hermann and in Hanover with Hans Deinzer, before embarking on an orchestral career with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. She was subsequently appointed principal clarinettist with the Berliner Philharmoniker, before becoming increasingly in demand as a soloist. Over the course of a career spanning over 30 years, she has been a much-celebrated soloist with more than three hundred orchestras, with concerts taking her to all the musical centres of Europe as well as to Brazil, Israel, Canada, China and Australia, to Japan and the USA.
Sabine Meyer has appeared with all the top-level orchestras in Germany and has been engaged by the world’s leading orchestras such as the Wiener Philharmoniker, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, Berliner Philharmoniker, Radio Symphony Orchestras of Vienna, Basel, Warsaw, Prague and Budapest as well as numerous additional ensembles. In 2018 Sabine Meyer was artist in residence at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, giving 19 concerts showcasing her many facets as an artist.
Sabine Meyer‘s special affection belongs to chamber music, where she has formed many long-lasting collaborations, working with partners such as Christiane Karg, Martin Helmchen, Antje Weithaas, Veronika Hagen, Bertrand Chamayou, Nils Mönkemeyer, William Youn and the Armida Quartet.
In the 2022/23 season, Sabine Meyer will appear on the major national and international stages. She will give trio performances with Fatma Said and Malcolm Martineau at the Konzerthaus Berlin, and in December 2022 embarks on tour in Germany with the Alliage Quintet, performing a Christmas programme under the title "Winterzauber". An extensive tour with the Kammerakademie Potsdam and concerts with the Navarra Symphony are scheduled for spring 2023.
A champion of contemporary music, Sabine Meyer has had works written for her by such composers including Jean Françaix, Edison Denissov, Toshio Hosokawa, Niccolò Castiglioni, Manfred Trojahn, Aribert Reimann, Peter Eötvös and Márton Illés.
Sabine Meyer’s extensive discography includes recordings for EMI Classics (now Warner Classics), Deutsche Grammophon, Sony and CAvi-music. Her recorded repertoire ranges from pre-classical to contemporary compositions, and includes the key clarinet repertoire. For Sony she recorded Mozart arias arranged for clarinet, a trio recording with Nils Mönkemeyer and William Youn and recently the “Fantasia” together with the Alliage Quintet.
Sabine Meyer has received eight “Echo Klassik Awards” and is a member of the “Academy of Arts Hamburg”. In 2010 she received the decoration “Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres” from the French government.
