The NEOJIBA Orchestra is the flagship artistic ensemble of NEOJIBA (Núcleos Estaduais de Orquestras Juvenis e Infantis da Bahia), a Brazilian program initiated by the Government of the State of Bahia in 2007. Renowned globally, NEOJIBA is dedicated to fostering social development through music education and practice. It draws inspiration from Venezuela's famed "El Sistema" model. Under the artistic direction and conducting of Ricardo Castro, a Bahian-born maestro and the only Latin-American to have won the prestigious first prize at The Leeds International Piano Competition, the orchestra has flourished.
The NEOJIBA Orchestra comprises nearly 100 talented young musicians, aged 13 to 27. It emphasizes not only their musical growth but also their educational development and pedagogical skills. These musicians play a pivotal role in the NEOJIBA program, serving as mentors and educators. They have been instrumental in providing musical training to over 6,000 children and teenagers across Bahia, acting as multipliers of the program's impact.
Gaining both national and international acclaim, the orchestra has performed almost 400 concerts, captivating an audience totaling almost half a million people. It made history in 2010 as the first Brazilian youth orchestra to tour Europe, subsequently embarking on eight international tours across Europe and the USA. Its 2022 tour marked the bicentenary of Brazilian Independence, showcasing performances in several countries, including a notable collaboration with esteemed pianist Maria João Pires. In 2023, the orchestra toured Brazil's North and Northeast regions, featuring performances with the celebrated violinist Midori. As the Resident Orchestra at the Septembre Musical de Montreux in Switzerland in 2014 and 2016, the NEOJIBA Orchestra has graced prestigious venues like the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Philharmonie in Paris, Santa Cecilia Hall in Rome, Konzerthaus in Berlin, Victoria Hall in Geneva, and the Royal Festival Hall in London. Its stage has been shared with luminaries like Martha Argerich, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Maxim Vengerov, Lang Lang, Shlomo Mintz, Katia & Marielle Labèque, and David Grimal.
NEOJIBA's program extends beyond its orchestral performances. It is an expansive educational initiative, promoting musical excellence and social inclusion. Through a network of training centers, NEOJIBA reaches out to children and youth, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds, offering them not only music education but also a pathway for personal and community development. The program fosters a nurturing environment where students learn teamwork, leadership, and gain self-esteem, thereby contributing positively to their communities. The success of NEOJIBA lies not only in its musical achievements but in its profound impact on the lives of thousands of young Brazilians, shaping a brighter, more harmonious future.
SAISON 2024/2025
Ricardo Castro © Karol Azevedo e Eduardo Tosta
Ricardo Castro, a Brazilian-born pianist and conductor, first captured attention with his prodigious talent at the tender age of five. Admitted to the Federal University of Bahia’s School of Music under Esther Cardoso, a disciple of the esteemed Marguerite Long, Castro’s early flair for the piano quickly translated into public performances. By age ten, he was already enchanting audiences as soloist.
At 19 years old, Castro took a significant step to refine his craft by enrolling at the Geneva Conservatory of Music in Switzerland. There, he studied under the tutelage of piano virtuoso Maria Tipo and conductor Arpad Gerecz. His time in Europe was marked by a string of victories in prestigious competitions, including the Rahn Competition in Zurich (1985), the Pembaur Competition in Bern (1986), the International ARD Competition in Munich (1987), and the Geza Anda Competition (1988). Castro further honed his skills in Paris, studying piano with Dominique Merlet.
Castro's international stature was cemented in 1993 when he clinched the first prize at the Leeds International Piano Competition, becoming the first Latin American to achieve this since its creation. This victory propelled him onto the global stage, where he has since performed with leading orchestras such as the Leipzig Gewandhaus, Zurich Tonhalle, and BBC London Philharmonic, collaborating with luminaries like Sir Simon Rattle and Martha Argerich.
Beyond his accomplishments as a performer, Castro has also made a significant impact as a conductor. In 2007, he founded the NEOJIBA program, inspired by Venezuela’s El Sistema, aiming to democratize music education and provide transformative opportunities for underserved youth in Brazil. As its general and artistic director, he has led the NEOJIBA Orchestra in numerous celebrated performances both domestically and on international tours.
As an educator, Castro’s influence extends into academia. He started teaching piano in 1992 at HEMU Fribourg and since 2020, he has been a professor at the Haute École de Musique in Geneva, where he leads the keyboard instruments department. His innovative approach to teaching also shines at the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole in Italy, where he developed a pioneering course on conducting from the keyboard.
Ricardo Castro’s career is a testament to artistic excellence and social commitment. His work not only enriches the musical repertoire but also promotes cultural access, earning him international accolades, including the distinction of being the first Brazilian named an honorary member of the Royal Philharmonic Society. His enduring passion for music continues to inspire a new generation of musicians and music lovers worldwide.

Lucas and Arthur Jussen are among the most sought-after piano duos of our time. Given their illustrious international careers, it is fair to say the Jussen brothers (born 1993 and 1996) are the Netherland’s pre-eminent ambassadors for classical music. With their energetic, almost symbiotic playing, their great refinement of sound, and gripping interpretations, they are praised vigorously by press and audiences alike. “It is like driving a pair of BMWs”, exclaimed conductor Michael Schønwandt about the two pianists after directing them in concert.
The Jussen brothers have performed with orchestras internationally, including the Boston Symphony Orchestra, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Concertgebouworkest, Budapest Festival Orchestra, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. In recital, they can be heard in Paris, Amsterdam, the Hague, London, Rome, Naples, Zürich, Mannheim, Stuttgart, and Potsdam, among others.
Recording exclusively with Deutsche Grammophon since 2010, their debut recording of works by Beethoven received platinum status and was awarded the Edison Klassiek audience award. Following a Schubert album and ‘Jeux’, a recording of French piano music, in 2015 their recording of Mozart’s piano concertos KV 365 and KV 242 together with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Sir Neville Marriner was released and the album reached gold status. The Jussen brothers also recorded Poulenc’s double piano concerto and Saint-Saëns’ ‘The Carnival of the Animals’ with the Concertgebouworkest and Stéphane Denève, and in 2019 they released a recording of concertos and chorales by Bach with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta. On ‘The Russian Album’ (2021) they interpret works for two pianos by Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, and Arensky. The latest addition to their discography is ‘Dutch Masters’ (April 2022) which is devoted to works by Dutch composers, in collaboration with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, among others. The recording was awarded an Edison Klassiek, as well as the audience award.
Lucas and Arthur received their first piano lessons in their native town of Hilversum. As children, they were invited to perform for the Dutch Queen Beatrix; and distinctions and awards in competitions followed. In 2005, the brothers met the Portuguese pianist Maria João Pires. During the following years they took lessons from both Pires and renowned Dutch teachers. Lucas completed his studies with Menahem Pressler in the US and with Dmitri Bashkirov in Madrid. Arthur graduated from the Amsterdam Conservatory, where he studied with Jan Wijn.
