Spotlight: Conductor Cornelius Meister in Stuttgart and Vienna

Since 2018, Cornelius Meister has shaped the artistic vision of the Staatsoper Stuttgart and Staatsorchester Stuttgart with extraordinary precision and a keen sense of musical dramaturgy. His extensive repertoire, spanning from Viennese Classicism and Late Romantic to contemporary works, reflects his remarkable versatility and passion for musical storytelling.

On November 24th, Mozart's Idomeneo premiered to great acclaim at the Stuttgart State Opera. Under Meister's baton, the compelling soundscape of this early masterwork unfolded in all its intensity. Further performances of this deeply moving Sturm und Drang opera are scheduled through the end of December.

Between performances of Idomeneo, Cornelius Meister will lead a concert program on December 8th and 9th at Stuttgart's Liederhalle, uniting two significant milestones of musical history. The program opens with Pierre Boulez's 12 Notations for Orchestra, originally a meticulously crafted piano composition that Boulez later expanded into an orchestral masterpiece. Having served as Boulez's assistant, Meister brings a uniquely personal connection to this cornerstone of contemporary music. The evening's centerpiece is Anton Bruckner's monumental Eighth Symphony, whose triumphant 1892 premiere in Vienna’s Musikverein is regarded as a landmark event.

In January 2025, Meister’s journey takes him back to Vienna, where he is a highly regarded regular guest since he first conducted at the Vienna State Opera in 2012. This time, he will lead Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos; especially anticipated in this run of performances is Anna Netrebkos debut as Ariadne.
