The Danish National Symphony Orchestra rings in 2025 with a spectacular flourish befitting the occasion: celebrating its 100th anniversary, the ensemble embarks on an extraordinary tour this January under the baton of its esteemed chief conductor, Fabio Luisi, joined by the exceptionally charismatic and expressive pianist Khatia Buniatishvili.
The tour begins with a concert at the Berlin Philharmonie, followed by seven performances across Germany, Belgium, Austria, and Hungary. The repertoire includes Sergei Rachmaninoff’s iconic Piano Concerto No. 2, 'Evening Land' by Bent Sørensen (2017), and Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 1 or, as an alternative, Carl Nielsen’s Symphony No. 4, 'The Inextinguishable'. A piece whose critically acclaimed recording with Deutsche Grammophon earned the orchestra the prestigious Gramophone Award in 2023.
The democratisation of classical music—using radio as a transformative medium—was the visionary mission of Danish opera singer and former 'Württembergischer Kammersänger' Emil Holm when he founded the orchestra for the newly established Danish State Radio in Copenhagen in 1925. Today, the Orchestra is recognised as one of Europe’s finest ensembles, captivating audiences and critics alike with its distinctive artistry.
With this centenary tour, the Danish National Symphony Orchestra sets a bold musical milestone, masterfully bridging its illustrious legacy with a forward-looking vision.
