Cellist Jaemin Han will be the featured artist at the inaugural BBC Proms Korea, a week-long festival taking place from December 2–8 at Seoul's Lotte Concert Hall. The event marks the first appearance of the BBC Proms in Korea, following previous international editions in Melbourne, Dubai, and Tokyo.
On the opening night of the festival, Han will perform the Asian premiere of Donghoon Shin’s Cello Concerto 'Nachtergebung' with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ryan Wigglesworth. The program also includes Han’s performance of Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1 at the Busan Cultural Centre and a recital on December 7 at Lotte Concert Hall with Wigglesworth on piano, featuring works by Debussy and Poulenc.
Ahead of the festival, Han will make his debut with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Glasgow on November 28, performing the UK premiere of Shin’s concerto at Glasgow’s City Halls. This appearance sets the stage for his collaboration with the orchestra during the BBC Proms Korea. Han, who first rose to international prominence as the youngest-ever Grand Prix winner at the George Enescu International Competition in 2021, is recognised as one of the most promising young cellists of his generation.
