Alfred Brendel 1931-2025

With quiet gratitude, we bid farewell to Alfred Brendel – one of the most significant pianists of his generation, a formative teacher, writer and a perceptive musical mind whose thinking and influence extended far beyond the concert hall.

The connection between Alfred Brendel and KD SCHMID dates back to the early years of our agency.

“Alfred Brendel was one of the first artists my father represented in the early 1960s. He was deeply impressed by his artistic clarity, his subtle sense of humour, and his uncompromising stance on music. From this early collaboration grew a long-standing friendship and deep mutual respect. I personally recall many encounters with Alfred Brendel, most recently in connection with his many piano recitals at Pro Musica in Hanover, which left a lasting impression on me. He will be greatly missed.”
(Cornelia Schmid, Honorary President KD SCHMID)

Brendel’s playing was marked by intellectual acuity and profound humanity. He did not seek effect, but essence – with an attentiveness that illuminated every detail, with a seriousness that allowed space for subtle nuance, and above all, with his unmistakable style. Through his interpretations, writings, and lectures, he shaped and inspired generations of musicians.
