David Afkham Awarded Order of Alfonso X the Wise

Conductor David Afkham has been awarded the Order of Alfonso X the Wise, one of Spain's most prestigious honours, recognising exceptional achievements in culture, education, science and the arts. The award recognises his outstanding contribution as Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Orquesta y Coro Nacionales de España, a position he has held with great distinction over the past twelve years.

The announcement follows a series of acclaimed performances in Madrid, including Britten's "War Requiem" and Mahler's "Symphony No. 9". Later this month, on 19 July, he will lead the orchestra in its BBC Proms debut at London's Royal Albert Hall, with a programme featuring works by Ravel, Rodrigo and Falla.
