First appointed in 2017, Andris Nelsons' tenure has seen the Gewandhausorchester embark on numerous successful projects, including celebrated international tours, critically acclaimed recording projects with Deutsche Grammophon, and a groundbreaking alliance with the Boston Symphony Orchestra, where Nelsons is Music Director.

“I am very happy to be able to continue the successful work with the Gewandhausorchester and the Gewandhaus team led by Director Andreas Schulz beyond 2027. It is something very special to collaborate with a director who supports the music and the musicians with such dedication. It is an honour for me to make music together with the players of this unique orchestra. I look back with great joy on our Mahler and Shostakovich Festivals, on the many recordings we have realised with Deutsche Grammophon, on the opportunities we have had to share the orchestra’s reputation worldwide, and, of course, on the concerts in the Gewandhaus itself, where we feel our bond with the local audience so strongly and on which we wish to continue building. For all of these experiences I am deeply grateful!" - Andris Nelsons"

It is cause for great pleasure that Andris Nelsons has committed to embarking upon a third term as Gewandhauskapellmeister. This continuation until 2032 is crucial for the perpetual artistic development of the Gewandhausorchester and gives us all an excellent fundamental basis for shaping the future. I am hugely looking forward to discussing and realising Andris Nelsons’ future ideas, as well as to increased collaboration with Leipzig Opera, to a reorientation of our touring strategy, to new recording projects with Deutsche Grammophon and to the further development of the Gewandhaus’s international festivals in Leipzig, the City of Music!"

- Andreas Schulz, Gewandhausdirektor
