John  Storgårds

Music Director of Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra
Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra
Chief Conductor of the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra
Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie

Chief Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, and from September 2026 Music Director of Canada’s National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa and Principal Conductor and Artistic Adviser of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, John Storgårds has a dual career as a conductor and violin virtuoso. Widely recognised for his creative flair for programming, Storgårds is renowned for performances of rousing energy and refined interpretation. As Artistic Director of the Lapland Chamber Orchestra, Storgårds has earned global critical acclaim for the ensemble’s adventurous performances and award-winning recordings, celebrating his 30th anniversary in the role in 2026.

The 2026/27 season begins with John Storgårds's return to the BBC Proms with the BBC Philharmonic, before he opens the orchestra's season in Manchester. He then continues with his first concert as Principal Conductor of the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie at the Philharmonie Berlin, leading an intricate programme featuring works by Fagerlund, Haydn and Prokofiev. Later in the autumn, Storgårds travels to Canada to lead the National Arts Centre Orchestra in his first concerts as Music Director, performing a programme of North American flair alongside classics by Beethoven and Dvořák. A major milestone follows shortly after with the opening of Turku's new Music Centre, Fuuga, where he conducts the inaugural concerts with the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra and Karita Mattila. Further highlights include a South Korean tour with the BBC Philharmonic in December, as well as return engagements with the Münchner Philharmoniker, Bamberger Symphoniker, WDR Sinfonieorchester, Luzerner Sinfonieorchester and the Iceland Symphony Orchestra.

Storgårds appears with such orchestras as Berliner Philharmoniker, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien, Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National de France, Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, BBC Symphony Orchestra, and London Philharmonic Orchestra as well as all major Nordic orchestras including the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, where he was Chief Conductor from 2008 to 2015. He also regularly returns to the Münchener Kammerorchester, where he was Artistic Partner from 2016 to 2019. Further afield, he appears with Sydney, Melbourne, Tokyo Metropolitan, Yomiuri Nippon, and NHK Symphony Orchestras as well as Boston Symphony Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, The Cleveland Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, and Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Soloists with whom he collaborates include Emanuel Ax, Yefim Bronfman, Colin Currie, Sol Gabetta, Kirill Gerstein, Augustin Hadelich, Hilary Hahn, Håkan Hardenberger, Leila Josefowicz, Lucas & Arthur Jussen, Truls Mørk, Gil Shaham, Christian Tetzlaff, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, Anne Sofie von Otter, and Roderick Williams, as well as with his “dynamic duo”-partner Barbara Hannigan for acclaimed podium swap engagements. As a violinist, Storgårds is an active chamber musician and recitalist, performing at renowned festivals such as the Kuhmo Chamber Music Festival in Finland and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival in the USA. He frequently incorporates solo performances into his conducting engagements, most recently with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, the Lahti Symphony Orchestra and the Kammerakademie Potsdam, and performs recitals internationally with his regular duo partner, Kirill Gerstein.

Storgårds’ vast repertoire includes all symphonies by Sibelius, Nielsen, Bruckner, Brahms, Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert, and Schumann, including the Finnish premieres of Schumann’s only opera ‘Genoveva’ and the early ‘Zwickau’ symphony, plus world premieres of Sibelius’ Suite op. 117 for violin and strings and the Late Fragments.

As soloist, he gave the Finnish premiere of Schumann’s own violin transcription of the cello concerto, as well as the Violin Sonata No 3. Embracing contemporary repertoire in his programmes, Storgårds regularly performs world premieres with many works being dedicated to him, including Per Nørgård’s Symphony No. 8 as well as Kaija Saariaho’s Nocturne for solo violin. In opera he conducted the world premiere production of Sebastian Fagerlund’s ‘Höstsonaten – Autumn Sonata’ at the Finnish National Opera directed by Stéphane Braunschweig. The title was a finalist at the 2018 International Opera Awards and was revived in autumn 2019. In the 2022/23 season, Storgårds led the world premiere production of Tapio Tuomela’s new opera ‘The Fur Hat Opera’, performing in Rovaniemi and at the Finnish National Opera with his Lapland Chamber Orchestra. Later in the season, Storgårds returned to the Finnish National Opera with Shostakovich’s ‘Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk’, which in 2025 he performed at the BBC Proms, in collaboration with the BBC Philharmonic and English National Opera.

Storgårds’ award-winning discography spans core repertoire by Schumann, Mozart, Beethoven, and Haydn, as well as rarities by Holmboe and Vasks, the latter featuring him as soloist. With the BBC Philharmonic, he recorded acclaimed Sibelius (2014) and Nielsen (2015) symphony cycles for Chandos, followed by a trilogy devoted to by American avant-garde composer George Antheil, completed in 2019. Their ongoing Shostakovich cycle has garnered international praise, with existing releases including Symphonies Nos. 1, 2, 3, 5, 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15, alongside Pärt’s "De Profundis" and Weinberg’s "Dawn" and Symphony No. 12. With the Lapland Chamber Orchestra for BIS Records, Storgårds has released Mahler’s Tenth in a special arrangement by Michelle Castelletti, as well as works by Sebastian Fagerlund and Kalevi Aho. Other notable albums feature music by Tarkiainen, Abrahamsen, Bent Sørensen, Nørgård, Korngold, Aho, and Rautavaara — the latter earning a Grammy nomination and a Gramophone Award in 2012. In 2023, Storgårds and the BBC Philharmonic were nominated for Gramophone’s “Orchestra of the Year Award”.

Storgårds studied violin with Chaim Taub and subsequently became concert master of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra under Esa-Pekka Salonen, before studying conducting with Jorma Panula and Eri Klas. He received the Finnish State Prize for Music in 2002 and the Pro Finlandia Prize 2012.

"But this was a night I might best remember for its revelatory Tchaikovsky. Never have I heard an orchestra so eloquently convey the profound sadness of the “Pathetique”; Storgårds and the orchestra made its pain powerfully palpable, its darkness almost impenetrable. It was an interpretation both deeply beautiful and intensely moving, totally devoid of schmaltz and histrionics. Seldom have I experienced a performance that treated this composer with such profound respect and emotional insight."

Rob Hubbard, 12 April 2026, The Minnesota Star Tribune

"Thanks to the skill of the BBC Philharmonic and John Storgårds, Shostakovich’s dramatic vision is realised more vividly here than ever heard it before. It’s not just the impeccably calibrated emergence of those musical forms achieved by Storgårds and his players that impresses, but how he brings ever more definition to what is unfolding. Storgårds manages the transition between sections highly effectively and in his reading Shostakovich’s many lines of counterpoint become the epitome of a Mayakovskian theatrical experiment."

Dominic Hartley, MusicWeb International, 24 March 2026

"John Storgårds led the San Francisco Symphony in a programme including Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor - the very definition of iconic. Conductors can easily be lured into searching for novel ways to perform the Fifth, with eccentric tempos or phrasing. But Storgårds let the music speak for itself. The result was a finely detailed performance of great power. Every note, every phrase, every dynamic built the structure of each movement with elegant nobility. Storgårds isn’t a physically showy conductor, but the conclusion of Beethoven’s Fifth found him bouncing with excitement on the podium."

Lisa Hirsch, San Francisco Chronicle, 23 Jan 2026

"The way Storgårds here darkly condensed multi-layered, jagged soundscapes far beyond Nordic melancholy into conflicts or accelerated them into frenzy was a large-scale orchestral masterpiece: the majestically solemn brass, the clanging intensity of the violins, grimly leaping basses and the sometimes airy, sometimes painfully intense wood left only one wish unfulfilled: for a sound bath in the crowd, live in the concert hall."

Urs Mattenberger, Luzerner Zeitung, 25.04.2021

"He’s a person of exuberant feeling and correspondingly large generous gestures, who positively radiated warmth. […] this was a terrific evening’s music-making."

Ivan Hewett, The Times, 03.09.2020

"This is a resounding performance...but more significantly it is a searching, very inward reading, too. John Storgårds favours an expansive, widescreen approach underlining the work’s theatricality and lending the big set pieces an implacable power...a terrific performance and a terrific-sounding disc."

Gramophone, 01.06.2020
