Sabine Meyer

Sabine Meyer is one of the world's most renowned instrumental soloists. It is partly due to her that the clarinet, often underestimated as a solo instrument, has recaptured the attention of the concert platform.

Born in Crailsheim, she studied in Stuttgart with Otto Hermann and in Hanover with Hans Deinzer, before embarking on an orchestral career with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. She was subsequently appointed principal clarinettist with the Berliner Philharmoniker, before becoming increasingly in demand as a soloist. Over the course of her career spanning over 30 years, she has performed countless concerts taking her to all the musical centres of Europe as well as to Brazil, Israel, Canada, China, Australia, Japan, and the USA.

As a celebrated soloist worldwide, Sabine Meyer has enjoyed working with more than 300 orchestras. She has performed with all major orchestras in Germany and has appeared with the world’s leading orchestras, such as the Wiener Philharmoniker, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, Berliner Philharmoniker, Radio Symphony Orchestras of Vienna, Basel, Warsaw, and Prague as well as numerous other ensembles. In 2018, Sabine Meyer was artist in residence at the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, giving 19 concerts showcasing her many facets as an artist.

Sabine Meyer has a special affection for chamber music and places great importance to long-lasting collaborations. She has performed in a variety of ensembles with artists such as Christiane Karg, Martin Helmchen, Antje Weithaas, Veronika Hagen, and Bertrand Chamayou.

In the 2024/2025 season, Sabine Meyer will appear on the major national and international stages once again. She gives concerts with the Armida Quartet in Madrid, Munich, Münster and at the Schubertiade in Hohenems as well as performing with her long-time musical partners Nils Mönkemeyer and William Youn in Kaiserslautern, Clausthal-Zellerfeld, and Bielefeld. Concerts with the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz and the Württembergisches Kammerorchester Heilbronn are also planned.

A champion of contemporary music, Sabine Meyer has had works written for her by composers including Jean Françaix, Edison Denisov, Harald Genzmer, Toshio Hosokawa, Manfred Trojahn, Aribert Reimann, Peter Eötvös, and Márton Illés.

Sabine Meyer’s extensive discography includes recordings for EMI Classics (now Warner Classics), Deutsche Grammophon, Sony, and CAvi-music. Her recorded repertoire ranges from pre-classical to contemporary compositions and includes the key clarinet repertoire. Most recently, Sony released a trio programme she recorded with Nils Mönkemeyer and William Youn as well as 'Fantastia' with the Alliage Quintett.

In addition to being awarded the ECHO KLASSIK eight times, Sabine Meyer is the recipient of the German Federal Cross of Merit (Bundesverdienstkreuz), the 'Lower Saxony Prize', the 'Brahms Prize', and the 'Praetorius Music Prize Lower Saxony'. She is also a member of the Akademie der Künste Hamburg and a recipient of the 'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres'.

"It is as if there are two players on the podium: one who plays woody low notes like a bass clarinet. And one who responds with playful lines in the high register. However, it was not a duet that took to the stage of the Munich Philharmonie on Sunday, but rather Sabine Meyer alone with her bass clarinet, accompanied by the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen under David Afkham."

Süddeutsche Zeitung, Henrik Oerding, 21.01.2019

"Sabine Meyer played them with such a beautiful, flexible tone that you could hear the familiar pieces as if they were new.""

Süddeutsche Zeitung, Klaus Kalchschmid, 22.10.2017

"Meyer shone with exquisite tone quality on long breaths, with virtuosity as well as with sensitive lyrical cantilena.""

DrehPunktKultur, Elisabeth Aumiller, 04.10.2017

"Light-hearted and accessible, but seriously skilled at the same time, It was fun, fascinating and fabulous."

Simon Walker, Newcastle Herald, Australia, 19.03.2018

"Sabine Meyer performed Mozart's clarinet concerto with noble passion. She sought close contact with the orchestral musicians with her looks and movements. She balanced the bold passages with moderation of affect. And in the melancholy dips, she conjures up tones as if made of liquid bronze."

Bergische Morgenpost, Christian Peiseler, 17.06.2017
