Lucas & Arthur Jussen
Lucas & Arthur Jussen are among the most sought-after piano duos of our time. Given their illustrious international careers, it is fair to say the Jussen brothers (born 1993 and 1996) are the Netherlands’ pre-eminent ambassadors for classical music. With their energetic, almost symbiotic playing, their great refinement of sound, and gripping interpretations, they are praised vigorously by press and audiences alike. “It is like driving a pair of BMWs”, exclaimed conductor Michael Schønwandt about the two pianists after directing them in concert.
Their international concert work regularly brings Lucas & Arthur Jussen together with leading orchestras such as the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields. Their artistic partners include conductors such as Iván Fischer, Susanna Mälkki, Joana Mallwitz, Andris Nelsons, Petr Popelka, Tugan Sokhiev, Kazuki Yamada and Jaap van Zweden.
Following acclaimed appearances at the Rheingau Musik Festival and the Festival de La Roque d'Anthéron and their celebrated debut at the BBC Proms, the 2026/27 season begins for Lucas & Arthur Jussen with a four-week tour of Australia, comprising concerts with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra as well as numerous recitals. Further highlights include their debut at Carnegie Hall in New York with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, appearances at the Osterfestspiele Baden-Baden and the Lucerne Festival, as well as engagements with orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Orquesta Nacional de España and the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.
A particular highlight of the season is the world premiere of a double concerto by Magnus Lindberg, composed especially for Lucas & Arthur Jussen, in December 2026 with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra under Jukka-Pekka Saraste. Further performances follow with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the WDR Sinfonieorchester, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Prague Symphony Orchestra.
In January 2027 the brothers embark on a seven-concert tour of Japan, during which they make their debut at Suntory Hall with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra under Kazuki Yamada. Further engagements see them perform with the Camerata Salzburg in Merano, Trieste and Locarno, as well as with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, the Konzerthausorchester Berlin and the Tonkünstler-Orchester. Also of note this season is a joint project with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields at the Klavier-Festival Ruhr, in which Lucas and Arthur Jussen each perform one of Beethoven's Piano Concertos, No. 2 and No. 5, as soloists. Recitals take them to Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, London, Tokyo, Hamburg and Warsaw, among other cities.
Lucas & Arthur Jussen have been exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artists since 2010. Their award-winning discography ranges from Beethoven, Schubert and French piano music through Mozart's Concertos K. 242 and K. 365 with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields under Sir Neville Marriner to Poulenc's Double Concerto, Saint-Saëns' "The Carnival of the Animals" with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and a Bach album with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta. On "The Russian Album" (2021) they turn to the music of Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky and Arensky. Their recording "Dutch Masters" (2022), featuring works by Dutch composers, received an Edison Klassiek as well as the audience award.
Lucas & Arthur Jussen received their first piano lessons in their hometown of Hilversum. A formative influence on their artistic development was their encounter with the Portuguese pianist Maria João Pires, who mentored them over many years. Lucas later studied with Menahem Pressler in the United States and with Dmitri Bashkirov in Madrid, while Arthur completed his studies with Jan Wijn at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
