Lauma Skride

Biography – about the artist.

Lauma Skride's playing is 'wonderfully sensitive, with marvellous tone quality, and always with highly virtuosic vigour', according to a review by the Bavarian Broadcasting Service. Combined with brilliant technique, these are the qualities with which Lauma Skride captivates audiences on major concert stages throughout the world, both as a soloist and chamber musician.

Lauma Skride, who was awarded the Beethoven Ring in 2008, is highly acclaimed for her interpretations of Germanic classical and romantic repertoire. Orchestras with which Lauma Skride has appeared include BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Hungarian National Philharmonic, hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt, Hamburger Symphoniker, Dresdner Philharmonie, Essener Philharmoniker, Bremer Philharmoniker, Philharmonisches Orchester Heidelberg, Tapiola Sinfonietta and Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria. Lauma Skride performs with such conductors as Andris Nelsons, Kristjan Järvi, Anu Tali, Muhai Tang, Peter Ruzicka, John Storgårds, Pedro Halffter, André de Ridder, Yan Pascal Tortelier, Cornelius Meister and Xian Zhang.

A highly sought after chamber musician, Lauma Skride founded the ‘Skride Quartet’ together with her sister Baiba, Harriet Krijgh and Lise Berthaud in 2016. Since then, the quartet has been touring to major European venues and festivals such as Musikverein Wien, Laeiszhalle Hamburg, Schubertiade, Utrecht Chamber Music Festival and Malmö Chamber Music Festival. In the 17/18 season, they will perform at the Philharmonie Essen, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Autumn Chamber Music Festival in Riga, Louisiana Museum in Humlebaek and Istanbul International Music Festival. The quartet’s first CD will be released in 2019.

Lauma Skride is also committed to the long established duo with her sister. Together the sisters have performed in Wigmore Hall London, Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Prague Spring Festival, etc. In October 2011, the duo premiered Hans Abrahamsen’s double concerto with the Royal Danish Orchestra in Copenhagen and the Swedish Chamber Orchestra – a work that was composed for the pair. Passionate energy, youthful vigour and musical sensitivity have become the trademarks of the Skride duo. Other chamber music partners of Lauma Skride include cellist Daniel Müller-Schott, Sol Gabetta and Julian Steckel, as well as Jörg Widmann, Christian Tetzlaff and the Armida Quartett. With Müller-Schott, the duo performs at Auditorium du Louvre this season.

Lauma Skride recorded Fanny Hensel's piano cycle Das Jahr for Sony in 2007 and received an ECHO Classic Award as Best Young Artist for this recording. Together with Baiba in 2011 she recorded the transcription of Johannes Brahms’ Hungarian Dances for violin and piano by Joseph Joachim for ORFEO. In 2016 they released a CD with a pure Scandinavian repertoire.

Born in Riga, Latvia, in 1982, Lauma Skride is the youngest of three daughters in a musical family. She began playing the piano at the age of five and was later a pupil of Anita Paze at the Emil Darzin School of Music in Riga. She then studied under Volker Banfield at the University of Music and Theatre in Hamburg. Lauma Skride has participated in numerous international competitions since the age of eleven, among them the Maria Canals Competition in Spain and the Cleveland International Piano Competition in the USA, and has won several prizes.

Reviews and quotes.

„The performance is wonderfully judged and executed throughout, and Lauma Skride's rapid repeated notes at the end are truly spine-tingling - it made me want to go straight back to the beginning again and learn more.“

BBC Music Magazine, Stephen Johnson, 01.12.2016

„Lauma makes this performance, marrying elfin dexterity with fresh air to which her sister responds with delicacy, a fullness of tone even at low volumes and that sense of innocence so central to the piece.“

Gramophone, Andrew Mellor, 01.10.2016

„When they cut loose in these Bartók-like folk-influenced miniatures the sense of abrupt, raw excitement was compelling.“

The Times, Richard Morrison, 04.05.2016
