Biography – about the artist.

Twenty-seven-year-old Harriet Krijgh is one of today’s most exciting and promising young cellists. Her grace and expressiveness touch her audiences as soon as she is on the concert platform.

Krijgh played in the most important venues in Europe including Vienna’s Musikverein and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. She has performed with orchestras such as London Philharmonic Orchestra, Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hannover, Bamberger Symphoniker, ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien, Copenhagen Philharmonic, Tampere Philharmonic, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Boston Symphony Orchestra and Sydney Symphony Orchestra. She is also regular guest at international festivals such as Rheingau Musik Festival, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Dresdner Musikfestspiele, Heidelberger Frühling and Schubertiade Hohenems.


Highlights of Krijgh’s 18/19 season include debuts with the Münchener Philharmoniker and Wiener Symphoniker, her first concerto appearances with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra and Hong Kong Sinfonietta and engagements with Duisburger Philharmoniker, Staatstheater Darmstadt, Münchener Kammerorchester and Noord Nederlands Orkest. Krijgh also performs the world premiere of David Lang’s new concerto for cello, soprano and strings with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta at the Cello Biennale in October 2018 and looks forward to presenting the North American premiere of Michel van der Aa’s Double concerto for violin, cello and orchestra with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra as well as the Spanish premiere of Sofia Gubaidulina’s Triple concerto for violin, cello and bayan with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia in June 2019.

In addition to engagements with orchestras, Krijgh performs in chamber music projects with Baiba Skride, Lauma Skride and Lise Berthaud as the Skride Quartet in Europe and the US, and collaborates with the Quatuor Modigliani and the Signum Saxophone Quartet. She also gives recitals in various venues in Germany, the Netherlands, Hong Kong and Japan.

Krijgh has an exclusive recording relationship with Deutsche Grammophon since April 2018 and anticipates her first release of works by Vivaldi under the yellow label in 2019. Her discography also comprises of six discs, all released by Capriccio in the last six years, featuring music by Kabalewski, Haydn, Brahms, Rachmaninov as well as several French composers. Krijgh is winner of numerous competitions. In 2015/2016 she was chosen "Rising Star" of by the European Concert Hall Organisation (ECHO).

Krijgh is Artistic Director of the annual International Chamber Music Festival in Utrecht since summer 2017, succeeding Janine Jansen, the founder of the festival. She also founded the festival “Harriet & Friends” in 2012, which takes place annually in July in Feistritz/Austria.
