Thomas Hampson sings Berg, conducted by winner of the Mahler Competition Bamberg

Thomas Hampson shone in the Ingolstadt ballroom last Sunday with an exquisite performance of Berg’s deeply Romantic “Seven Early Songs” as part of a prizewinners’ concert conducted by Italian conductor and winner of this year’s Mahler Competition, Guiseppe Mengoli.

A review from Donaukurier wrote: "All the yearning morbidity, the shimmering ecstasy, the euphoric intoxication, the indulgent surges of emotion, the decadent "fin-de-siècle opulence" revealed in these melodies (quite delicate in their demands), Thomas Hampson evokes with the emphatic vocal culture of his beautiful, brightly warm, slender yet substantially refined baritone."
