In celebration of Håkan Hardenberger’s 60th birthday and his illustrious career over the last 40 years, the Hardenberger International Trumpet Competition is announced today. A cross-border international competition jointly organised by Malmö Live Konserthus / Malmö Symphony Orchestra and the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) / Danish National Symphony Orchestra, the inaugural edition of the Hardenberger International Trumpet Competition will take place in October 2023.
As one of the world’s leading trumpet soloists, Hardenberger performs with the world’s foremost orchestras and is recognised and acclaimed as a pioneer of significant and virtuosic new trumpet works, including those written for him by Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Brett Dean, HK Gruber, Mark-Anthony Turnage, etc.
Two world premieres feature in Hardenberger’s 2021/2022 season, including Jörg Widmann’s new Trumpet Concerto which has been successfully premiered with the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and Andris Nelsons last month, as well as Helen Grime’s new Trumpet Concerto which will be performed next spring to kick off Hardenberger’s Artist Portrait with the London Symphony Orchestra.
As honorary artist at the Malmö Live Concert Hall since 2019, Hardenberger celebrates his 60th birthday this week with his home orchestra, the Malmö Symphony Orchestra. Together with conductor and friend Fabien Gabel, Hardenberger performs Betsy Jolas Onze Lieder and Florent Schmitt Suite for Trumpet and Orchestra as part of a French programme.
