Markus Becker REGER150

Biography – about the artist.

In Max Reger's piano concerto, modernism and the outgoing romanticism rub shoulders like two continents. The result is music that is both fascinatingly powerful and tender. The opening movement is unsurpassed in dramatic density, the following Largo is one of Reger's most beautiful creations, and the Finale alternates between ragtime, absurd virtuosity and a good-humoured final sprint in F major.

Pianist Markus Becker has received many awards for his Reger discoveries, and his art is considered the benchmark of modern Reger playing. With him as interpreter of the colossal piano concerto, we want to celebrate Max Reger's 150th birthday. To this end, Markus Becker has found wonderful partners to jointly unearth treasures in Reger's chamber music. More details of the chamber music project, please visit Impresariat Simmenauer.

Reger150 - In 2023 we celebrate the 150th birthday of Max Reger

Markus Becker, internationally celebrated Reger interpreter, plays the legendary piano concerto.

Pianist Markus Becker is internationally recognised as a leading interpreter of Reger.
His complete recording of Max Reger's piano works received the Annual Prize of the Deutschen Schallplattenkritik, the Echo Klassik twice, many awards from leading specialist magazines and countless enthusiastic reviews. "One of the rare truly great achievements of German pianism of the last fifty years," was the verdict of FonoForum.

With his standard-setting live recording of Max Reger's Piano Concerto, Becker has once again clearly underlined this reputation. Together with conductor Joshua Weilerstein and the Radiophilharmonie Hannover of the NDR, he created enthusiastic reactions in the concert hall and among CD listeners. This production was also warmly received by audiences and the press and was awarded the Opus Klassik in 2019.  "Markus Becker's recording is for me the benchmark of modern Reger playing." (Michael Schwalb/WDR)

Fascinating is Markus Becker's powerful interpretation, at the same time always attentive to transparency, a direct, spirited access and at the same time a piano sound that is always perfectly round and singing. The work demands above all a well-balanced interplay between soloist and orchestra; here Becker's love for chamber music is evident. He sees himself in the soloist role on an equal basis with the orchestra.
There are treasures to be unearthed in the complex score of Reger's Piano Concerto. The opening movement is unsurpassed in dramatic density, the following Largo is one of Reger's most beautiful creations, and the finale alternates between ragtime, absurd virtuosity and a good-humoured final spurt in F major - a course of the highest energy and intensity.

Max Reger's and his Piano Concerto are among the most important points of reference in the musical world between Romanticism and Modernism. We want to celebrate them both on this anniversary.
