KD SCHMID Fazıl Say

Soloist

Fazıl Say

Pianist and Composer

Biography – about the artist.

With his extraordinary pianistic ability, Fazıl Say has been touching audiences and critics alike for more than 25 years in a way that has become rare in the increasingly materialistic and elaborately organised world of classical music. Concerts with this artist are something else. They are more direct, more open, more exciting. In short: they go straight to the heart.

Since the beginning of his career, he has performed with many renowned American and European orchestras and numerous leading conductors, building up a diverse repertoire ranging from Bach to Vienna Classical (Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven), romantic and contemporary music, including his own compositions for piano.

Guest performances have taken Fazıl Say to countless countries on all five continents, and he also appears time and again as a chamber musician. With violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja, for example, he forms a fantastic duo; other notable collaborators are Maxim Vengerov, the Minetti Quartett, Nicolas Altstaedt and Marianne Crebassa.

As a composer, Fazıl Say has been commissioned by the Salzburger Festspiele, the WDR, the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Dresdner Philharmonie, the Fondation Louis Vuitton, the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the BBC, among others. His output includes four symphonies, two oratorios, various solo concertos and numerous piano and chamber music works. In the 2021/22 season, his concerto for two pianos for Lucas and Arthur Jussen will be premiered with the Münchner  Philharmonikern under the baton of John Storgårds. His second violin concerto will also have its premiere this season, performed by Friedemann Eichhorn with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin conducted by Christoph Eschenbach.

Among the pianistic highlights of the 2021/22 season are concerts with the Oregon Symphony in Portland, concerts and tours with the Camerata Salzburg, the Chamber Orchestra of Europe and the Bilkent Symphony Orchestra, as well as a residency with het Residentie Orkest Den Haag.

Fazıl Say can be heard in recital in cities including Paris, Milan, Amsterdam, Geneva and Munich. This season's programme is mainly devoted to Bach's Goldberg Variations and Schubert's C minor Sonata D 958, as well as a programme of Handel, Beethoven and Schubert, and he also approaches french repertoire around Couperin and Debussy, each peppered with his own compositions.

Fazıl Says has an extensive discography with over 40 CDs. His recordings for Teldec Classics, naïve and Warner have received several awards, including four ECHO KLASSIK and a Gramophone Classical Music Award. Fazıl Say's recording of all Beethoven piano sonatas was most recently released on Warner Classics in January 2020. In the 2021/22 season, he will also record Bach's Goldberg Variations for Warner Classics.
