Kari Kriikku dazzles in mesmerising display of virtuosity

20.10.2016

Last week the clarinetist Kari Kriikku performed Saariaho’s D’om le Vrai Sens with the New York Philharmonic conducted by Esa-Pekka Salonen. As written by the Guardian, the artist Kari Kriikku “[…] is the go-to performer for this sort of music” which comes as no surprise since the composer Kaija Saariaho wrote the concerto for Kriikku personally.

The almost theatrical performance – slow-marching and dancing involved – convinced the audience with an artist who “[…] can place a note “cleanly” in front of a listener, and then agitate it into an unrecognizable, yet perfectly harmonized, sound”. Always giving the audience members something new to observe, Kriikuu “[…] danced through the percussion section, then past Salonen – while keeping perfect track of the brisk, thrashing lines in the fourth movement”.
