We mourn the passing of Jiří Bělohlávek who died last week in Prague. Konzertdirektion Schmid represented Jiří Bělohlávek in Germany for almost 20 years, starting in 1980 and during many of these years I worked for him personally. I heard many of the wonderful Czech pieces of music with him for the first time: the symphonies by Martinu, an unforgettable performance of „Jenufa“ at Glyndebourne and the „Asrael-Symphonie“ by Suk. A truly historic moment which I had the privilege to share was the opening of the Prague Festival right after the fall of the iron curtain in the presence of President Vaclav Havel who entered the hall accompanied by minutes of applause. One year later Jiří Bělohlávek lost the direction of the Czech Philharmonic to Gerd Albrecht, a real blow for him. How wonderful that he was able to spend the last years of his rich life again as Music Director of this special orchestra which he led to new artistic heights. And wonderful for us that we were connected again to him and the Czech Philharmonic. Jiří Bělohlávek will always be remembered.
