American baritone Eugene Chan has been hailed by critics with “a voice as handsome as his countenance” (San Francisco Classical Voice). His “full resonant instrument, flowing legato line, gorgeous vocalism allied to passionate declamation, and exemplary diction” have brought him many successes in opera and concert halls throughout the United States, Europe and Asia.

Recent highlights include his role debut as Hajný in a new production of “Rusalka” with Theater Basel in Switzerland and his Italian debut as Dandini in Daniele Abbado’s production of Rossini’s “La Cenerentola” with the Teatro Comunale di Bologna. He was also a winner of the prestigious Sullivan Foundation and appeared in recital for San Francisco Opera’s prestigious “Schwabacher Debut Recital Series” and Marilyn Horne Foundation’s Annual Series “The Song Continues”at Carnegie Hall.

The San Francisco native has performed with many prestigious international companies including the San Francisco Opera, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Opera Theater of St. Louis, Theater Basel, and the Shanghai National Grand Theater in repertoire that includes the title roles of “Don Giovanni” and “Eugene Onegin”, Papageno (“Die Zauberflöte”), Danilo (“The Merry Widow”), Prince Yeletsky (“Queen of Spades”), Schaunard (“La bohème”), Albert (“Werther”), Gasparo (“Rita”), Abbate Cospicuo (“Arlecchino”), L’Horloge Comtoise (“L’enfant et les sortilèges”), among others.

An avid recitalist, he garnered critical acclaim when he stepped in with less than 24 hours notice to sing Orff’s “Carmina Burana” at the world-renowned Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic,conducted by Bramwell Tovey, in July 2008. Mr. Chan made his Carnegie Hall debut under the auspices of the Marilyn Horne Foundation in January 2008. He has been featured as soloist with orchestra’s such as the San Francisco Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Toscanini Orchestra of Parma and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in repertoire that includes Orff’s “Carmina Burana”, the Fauré “Requiem”, Copland’s “Old American Songs”, the Brahms “Requiem”, Vaughan Williams’ “Songs of Travel”, the Dvořák “Te Deum”, and Ligeti’s “Aventures & Nouvelle Aventures”.

Mr. Chan holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Sacramento State University and is a graduate of the Theater Basel OperAvenir, Seattle Opera Young Artists Program, Music Academy of the West, the Steans Institute at the Ravinia Festival, OperaWorks!, and San Francisco Opera’s Merola training programs. He has received numerous prizes and awards in many international competitions including the Geneva International Competition, the Elena Obraztsova International Competition, the Premio Spiros Argiris International Competition,the Washington International Competition, the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, the Marilyn Horne Foundation and the William Matheus Sullivan Foundation.
