The German tenor Daniel Behle is one of the most promising singers of his generation. Important upcoming engagements include his role debuts as Tito/La clemenza di Tito and as Leukippos/Daphne at the Frankfurt Opera in the 2009/10 season. Furthermore, he is going to sing Tamino at the Salle Pleyel in Paris with the Akademie für Alte Musik and René Jacobs, arias in Bach’s St. John Passion at the Cologne Philharmonie with the Gürzenich Orchestra and Markus Stenz. In 2011 he will record Alessandro nell’Indie for EMI and perform for the first time at the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich (Tamino) and at the Grand Théâtre de Genève (Belmonte).
Recent highlights include his debut at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence as Tamino/Die Zauberflöte under the baton of René Jacobs, Belmonte/Die Entführung aus dem Serail at the Berlin State Opera “Unter den Linden”, Ramiro/La cenerentola at the Royal Opera Stockholm, Camille de Rosillon at La Scala di Milano and Nemorino/L’elisir d’amore at the Vienna State Opera.
Since the 2007/08 season, Daniel Behle is a member of the opera at the Frankfurt Opera where her performed Prunier/La Rondine, (concert version), Tamino, Walther von der Vogelweide/ Tannhäuser, Belmonte, Cassio/Otello (concert version), Don Ottavio/Don Giovanni, Ferrando/Così fan tutte, Don Ramiro/La cenerentola and Gonzalve/L’heure espagnol. Daniel Behle is equally successful as operetta singer with roles including Symon/Der Bettelstudent, Alfred/Die Fledermaus and Camille de Rossilon/Die lustige Witwe, among others.
Daniel Behle is a much sought-after concert and lied singer, too. He performed with the WDR Radio Cologne, at the Festival Kissinger Sommer, and in several European countries. His concert repertoire includes Johann Sebastian Bach’s great oratorios and Handel’s The Messiah as well as Rossini’s Stabat Mater and Petite Messe Solennelle, Dvorak’s Requiem, Schumann’s Der Rose Pilgerfahrt and Mendelssohn’s Elijah.
His first Lieder CD (Phoenix Classics) featuring lieder by Schubert, Beethoven, Grieg, Britten, and Trojahn has received much critical acclaim. A CD with Schuberts Die schöne Müllerin will be released soon. The recording of Schumann’s Dichterliebe is scheduled in 2010. Daniel Behle is also a Lieder composer. In 2008, he premiered his song cycle Der Flug des Reihers (with poems by Manfred Mühlbauer) at the Festival Kissinger Sommer.
Daniel Behle was born in Hamburg. After completing his studies of trombone, he studied voice with James Wagner and his mother Renate Behle as well as composition at the Conservatory of Music in Hamburg. He graduated with distinction in 2004.
The young singer has received special recognition in various competitions: First prize in the International Robert Stolz Competition 2004, First prize in the Queen Sonja Competition 2005 in Oslo, second prize in the International Competition - Cologne 2002 and special prize in the national competition Bundesgesangswettbewerb 2002.
